Design Considerations for Direct RF Sampling and Synthesis Wideband Radios

As the sample rate of increasingly power-efficient medium resolution data converters enters the GSPS range, direct RF sampling and synthesis become attractive enablers for multi-standard wideband transceivers. This talk will first compare front-ends using RF-sampling ADCs/DACs versus zero-IF/low-IF architectures employing baseband data converters. Next, a discussion of the main converters’ metrics and how these relate to system-level specifications and use cases will follow. GHz-rate data converters suffer, however, of specific spectral spurious content not found on more common lower frequency architectures. Ways to deal with such impairments will be covered. Finally, a perspective on present technology trends and future projections will conclude the tutorial.
