A port reconfigurable quadrature coupler is developed, designed and tested. The resulting coupler has up to three modes of operation; the Quadrature mode, the Thru mode and the Coupled mode. For the Quadrature mode the coupler operates as a normal quadrature coupler where the input signal is approximately evenly split in magnitude between the two output ports with ideally a 90° phase difference. For the Thru and Coupled modes of operation near 100% of the input signal is directed to the thru and coupled ports respectively while maintaining a quadrature phase relationship. A GaAs MMIC was designed and tested to demonstrate coupler operation.
