High Performance Active Phased Arrays for MEO constellations: Challenges and Opportunities

Supporting high throughputs into remote sites using the SES O3b Medium Earth Orbiting Satellite Constellation has required using large steerable parabolic antennas with HPAs. Recently, SES and Viasat Switzerland have developed a dual-beam active phased array with good performance. However, the demand for even higher throughputs necessitates new approaches to the design of such arrays to overcome the challenges of higher cost, weight, size, and power consumption.
