While local and personal wireless technologies have greatly evolved in the last few years, new applications and continued growth in usage demand greater throughput and reliability with lower latencies. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, high-bandwidth connectivity to multiple TVs and monitor displays, and sensing applications such as gesture recognition and people counting are just a few applications that require new wireless technologies that can meet and exceed what current wireless interfaces can offer. To meet the demanding requirements of such diverse applications, the IEEE 802.11 working group has established the Integrated mm-Wave (IMMW) group to investigate extensions to the <7GHz MAC and PHY to support the required capabilities to meet the needs of both communications and sensing applications. This tutorial provides an overview of IMMW including applications, key challenges and possible technology directions.
