Challenges for Space Solar and How to Address Them

For over fifty years, the concept of solar power satellites has been examined as a potential source of clean, constant, globally transmissible, and unlimited energy. The progress towards the deployment of solar power satellites and the development of the underlying technology has been slow. This talk outlines some of what has been accomplished so far, the challenges remaining, and possible paths forward. Key areas of consideration include those concerning technological, economic, legal, operational, and schedule factors. Different proposed space solar implementations and power beaming modalities offering varying suitability for different application contexts. Opportunities and challenges for a range of solar power satellite use cases will be discussed.
