Fast DC/DC Modulator Using a Single Stage Buck Converter

This talk presents the detailed design procedure of a prototype DC/DC modulator capable of 1MHz bandwidth on highly reactive loads. The prototype uses off-the-shelf boards for the active components and a custom designed filter. The latter has been optimized to achieve an optimum frequency response. Thermal measurements show the importance of the losses in the filter. Being based on a single buck-converter, the modulator is relatively easy to drive and control. Developed originally for 3D printer applications, this design can be customized to drive different loads including RF power amplifiers.
